Chapter Thirty-Three
It was dark and quiet on the road out of Marystown. Traffic was light and almost nonexistent once they got farther from town. Windflower could already hear Thibeau snoring in the back seat. He rummaged through his bag and found the CD.
Windflower had heard some Brahms before, but never so much at all the same time. These symphonies were certainly a revelation. The first symphony, which one local wag had dubbed Beethovenâs Tenth, an homage to his muse and the creator of nine previous masterpieces, was musical perfection. Maybe thatâs why it took over twenty years to compose, thought Windflower as he listened to the prolonged introduction and through the allegro, which offered some gentle moods with woodwinds and strings.
He floated along the rest of the symphony as he and the hearse sped up the highway, and it was so calming that he stopped after the first symphony because he wanted to stay alert for roadside dangers. And the promised snow had started to swirl outside. He put away the CD for later use and focused on his driving.
That was good, because just before the Terrenceville turnoff a large female moose wandered onto the highway. He waited as the moose took her time to cross the road and then pushed her way through the snow and into the bush. Windflower paused for a moment on the quiet highway and took a couple of long breaths. As his mind wandered a little, he remembered talking to his Uncle Frank last year about moose and some dreams he was having.
His uncle had told him that having a moose cross your path, in a dream or real life, was a blessing and probably a sign as well. When Windflower had questioned him about that, Uncle Frank said that moose were often sent to help guide us on a journey. Maybe that was what this moose was doing tonight, thought Windflower. The other thing his uncle had said was that in a dream, moose often came to help us rebalance and refocus on what was really important. And to think about others before ourselves.
That was a lot to think about, and Windflower couldnât risk driving into a ditch or hitting a moose, so he brought himself back to the task at hand. More snow, but thankfully no more moose on the highway as he reached the curves at Swift Current and half an hour later their first pit stop at Goobies. Thibeau was still snoring in back, so Windflower went into the service centre and got them both coffees and apple flips. His passenger was awake when he came out, so he passed along the drink and snack. Thibeau took the offerings and put his buds in.
That was fine with Windflower. There was a lot more traffic on the road to Gander, their stop for the night, and a ton more snow in the air and on the highway.

Tizzard had hoped his day would be winding down as he waved goodbye to Windflower and the hearse.
